Message from Lynn McCarthy
As AngelRiders, we've been supporting the Hospital Outreach Program (HOP) since it first started. And it's been making a huge difference in the lives of seriously ill kids. Here's a quote from a specialist at the Connecticut Children's Medial Center, "Recently I met with a patient who, five years ago, had worked with our first HOP specialist. She still talked about how great the experience was, how supportive, fun and helpful those visits were.&q
Did you know all of the HOP specialists have been camp counselors or program staff at the Hole in The Wall Camp in Ashford? They use their skills from that experience and their own loving ingenuity to find fun projects for their HOP kids. Here's one of the wilder projects that I heard is a favorite among the kids: mutant Beanie Babies...cutting up beanie babies and then sewing them back together to create new ones!
Shine on,
Lynn
Tip of the week: check out this great web site for tips on keeping it safe out there.

Volunteer Spotlight
Mike Tyler, one of our long time AngelRiders has many claims to fame. He works for FUSCO, who is one of our major sponsors. He is one of our riders who now sports an AngelRide tattoo. And now he has just been accepted as a volunteer camp counselor for one week at Camp this summer! Congrats Mike!!

Training
We're only a couple weeks out from the ride, and you may be hitting a wall on your training. Here are some fun words of wisdom from our multi-year rider ChrisH, "When I first signed up to join the AngelRide community, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Though I knew how to ride a bike, I hadn't done so with any seriousness in 20 years (I think my last bike had a banana seat!). I was painfully out of shape but, after some encouragement, ready for the challenge. During my first training ride, I was rudely reacquainted with the laws of physics (i.e., if you are overweight, going up a steep hill, and pedaling a 50 lb. WWII-era bike, you will suck much wind.) I managed about 10 miles on my first ride and thought it was something of an accomplishment. As I progressed, I was continually outmatched by Connecticut's rolling landscape and given to frequent stops to catch my breath. But, in the end, I did it and it felt pretty damn good. I'll say again, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. No idea how good it would feel to accomplish something that I didn't think I had in me. No idea how addictive biking would become. No idea how magical Camp would be. No idea how a group of people I had just met would come so quickly to feel like family. So, if you are training for your first ride, keep pedaling and expect great things!"
Training Opportunity: AngelRide Ambassadors MikeT and TomW will be participating in the Bloomin Metric Ride on Sunday May 23rd. They have incorporated the Bloomin Metric into their AngelRide training for years. For more information about this great ride, please visit: http://www.soundcyclists.com/BloominMetric.htm

Fundraising
Remember to see if your employer, or those of your donors, do matching charity contributions. Matching employer contributions can make a huge difference in the money you end up donating.
Also, if you receive cash from your donors, just send in a personal check to cover those donations. Just be sure to enter those donations on your webpage as an "offline donation", note your name or team name on the memo line of the check, and send the check as soon as possible to: The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, 555 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, CT 06511

Event Logistics
Due to the damage done by the flooding in southeastern Connecticut, we've had to make a few more route changes toward the end of the ride day 2. We'll be posting these on mapmyride, and you can be assured that Erny, "The Route Queen", will have them well marked for you during the ride.
We had a request from a rider to see if Erny could take all the uphills out of the route -- they were OK with the downhills. Ok, Erny's magical, but not that magical.
