Message from Lynn McCarthy

I learn something new and wonderful about the Hospital Outreach Program (HOP) all the time. For instance, HOP specialists visit with about 8 kids each day, and the most asked-for character to be drawn on a window or whiteboard is...Sponge Bob! When you get a chance, check out the HOP video to see your AngelRide donations making a huge difference in the lives of seriously ill children. It's the thought of these kids that keeps me so passionate about AngelRide.

We're trying to raise even more donations for HOP this year -- one of the key ways is by brining in more 2nd day riders. We'd love to triple our number of 2nd day riders this year. If you have a friend that loves to ride, please tell them about AngelRide and the fantastic 50-mile Sunday route from the Camp to Mystic.

Also, something new to consider; if you are a Sunday Rider, friends of AngelRide from the Mystic Community are opening their homes for those of you who may be traveling from a distance and would like to stay overnight on Saturday. PLUS there will be a potluck dinner Saturday night in Mystic for any of the Sunday Riders who can come. Please contact Mike Smiles, 203.772.0522 to reserve your spot.

Shine on,

Lynn

P.S. Tip of the week: Single file riding only! Do not ride abreast of another AngelRider or an open road, blocking motorists. This holds up traffic, angers motorists, and is DANGEROUS! Be courteous to motorists and more than likely they will reciprocate.

If you haven't already joined our AngelRide Community on Facebook and Twitter, please do! We're having fun posting pictures and videos of past AngelRides, and it's a great way to stay connected with our whole AngelRide community before the amazing ride weekend. Post messages, share training rides, vote on the AngelRide 2010 theme song, and more!

On AngelRide you can have your cake and eat it too! In addition to all the rest of the great food we had during AngelRide last year, we also had some huge cakes donated by Montilio's Bakery in Brockton, MA. We're talking over a thousand slices of cake. And I can personally attest that my slices were scrumptious!

Training

Tip: Training is about getting fit, but it's just as important to make sure your bike is fit -- and that it fits you! Here's another tip from Coach Al...

If your hips tend to move side to side while you are biking, your saddle might be too high or you might have some other fit issue with your bike. I'd recommmend you have your fit looked at as soon as you can. You can email Todd Kenyon at TTBikeFit.com for a thorough fit and analysis. You'll be more powerful, a lot more comfortable, and will enjoy cycling much more!

Check out our official Training Calendar for group rides led by our AngelRide Ambassadors! If you would like to host a training ride or share a group ride opportunity, please reach out to Ray Shedd and he will post your training ride for others to see!

Fundraising

Two of our returning riders are in their senior year at Old Saybrook High School. BryanC and MattM have made AngelRide their senior project. They have put together a team from their school and are planning to raise $10,000 for HOP! To raise the funds, they are sending out hundreds of letters, visiting businesses in their town, and even advertising in their local paper. They've scheduled training rides together twice a week. And yes, then they'll write a report and present their wonderful work at their school. But no worries, we don't expect a report from any of our other riders.

Also, Ray Shedd will be hosting a fundraising workshop conference call on Tuesday, April 27th at 12:00 noon. Ray will discuss fundraising tips, email design, and corporate sponsorships. All are welcome to join! Please email Ray if you wish to join for this call!

Event Logistics

We have a wonderful group of Team leads for our volunteers. We all met up a couple of Saturdays ago to hash out logistics ont he route and rest stops. We discussed interesting topics like road damage and stuck our heads into our storage shed to see what additional supplies will be needed this year. So rest assured, there are a whole bunch of people working hard to make sure AngelRide works well for you!
