Message from Lynn McCarthy

Hello AngelRiders -- 11 weeks to go!

Over the past couple weeks I've gotten a number of questions about joining a team -- seems like it would be a good thing to talk about here! When you sign up for AngelRide, you can do so as an individual rider, or as part of a team. The team concept is pretty simple -- you are joining a group of friends to fundraise and maybe even train together. The fundraising minimum is still $1,000 per rider, but you share that goal across your team and can decide how to best reach your overall team goal. So if your team has 3 riders, and you've decided to raise more than the $3,000 minimum because of your belief in HOP, you might have one rider that raises $1,500, a second that raises $1,400, and a third that raises $900 for example. Together you raised $3,800 for HOP! You can start or join a team when you first sign up for AngelRide. If you want to join one later, just go to your personal Web page and click on "Edit my Profile". You should see a link at the bottom of the page to "Join a Team". If you have any troubles at all with this, just send an email to Molly Sullivan, she knows everything there is to know about the website. Then remember when you are fundraising, you have a shared team goal. If your friends go to AngelRide.org to search for you in order to make a donation, their actual donation will show up under your team captain. No worries, because you are fundraising together. If you want their donation to show up on your personal web page, make sure to give them the link to your page. In either case, the money you raise goes against your team goal, and most importantly, goes to benefit the kids in HOP!

Shine on!

Lynn

P.S. If you’re a multi-year AngelRider, don't forget you still need to sign up on AngelRide.org. We’re filling up fast and we really want every single rider from years past to ride with us again!

Volunteer Spotlight

You'll see quite a few of our 350 volunteers over Memorial Day weekend. Some at the start, more at the rest stops, and lots of cheering from the ones at the finish line. But there are a few of this crew that work tirelessly behind the scenes -- a few that you might not meet because they are on the run the whole weekend. So I'll talk about them here. Your route is marked by 426 signs and 210 chalk arrows. Every turn, every corner, every major intersection. And it's Erny and her crew of route markers that spend nights before the ride placing those signs, and nights after the ride removing them. And Erny won't tolerate one sign out of place, which is why no rider noticed last year when someone stole 101 signs -- half the signs on day 2 from a portion of the route. Erny and her gang went out at midnight on Saturday to replace the 20 miles of stolen signs. Awoke at 5:30am on Sunday to find that they had been stolen again! Not only did they mark the 185 mile route once, they had to mark a portion of it two more times! Now that's dedication to making sure you don't get lost.

Training

Since our multi-year AngelRiders know so much about the route, ride logistics, fundraising for HOP, and so much more, we’ve asked some of them to become ambassadors to our newer riders this year. If you are a first or second year rider, expect a call or email from your ambassador. Be sure to lean on them for anything AngelRide! And don’t forget about the 15 mile training ride on Sunday March 28th. Join Tom W and a bunch of other AngelRiders for the ride, and then join the Donor Day festivities at the Camp. I can't wait to see you all!

Fundraising

I might sound like a broken record, but I have to say it again -- 100% of the money you raise goes to the HOP charity. To bring a ray of sunshine in the lives of seriously ill children. To help them cope with the trauma in their lives. To let them be kids. Now Dan S takes his fundraising to a whole new level -- here's what he told me this week: "In order to raise money for AngelRide, I call people or see them in person and threaten to taser them... if that doesn't work, I tell them I am riding 1,500 miles in three days barefoot with no petals on the bike, and finally, if all else fails, I stick to the truth and tell them that it brings magic into the lives of children who need some laughter and fun." Dan S raised $3,645 last year.

Also, Ray Shedd will be hosting a fundraising workshop conference call on Friday, March 26th at 6:00 pm. Ray will discuss fundraising tips, email design, and corporate sponsorships. All are welcome to join! Please email Ray if you wish to join for this call!

Check Donations -- if your donors prefer to write a check, have them make checks payable to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp before inputing them to your personal web page under " offline donations" and mail to: 555 Long Wharf Drive., New Haven, CT 06511.

Event Logistics

We have lots of options for AngelRiders, which creates lots of logistical decisions for you and us:

  1. If you ride for two days, you’ll stay at the Hole in the Wall Camp on Saturday night.

  2. Two-day Riders -- Meet Friday night at the Mystic YMCA

    1. Those Riders will take the bus. You must let me know early so that I will reserve enough buses and box lunches for the ride up to the hotel in Waterbury.

    2. You must also reserve a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Waterbury, 203-575-1500, for $85.00. Be sure to let the hotel know you are an AngelRider to secure available discounts. To save money, you can share rooms with other riders by posting your request on the discussion boards located on your personal Web page.

    3. You can bring your bike to Mystic on Friday and we'll ship it to the start for you.

  3. Two-day Riders meeting us at the Start in Norfolk

    1. If you decide to meet at the Start on Saturday morning, please know that we do not provide transportation back to the Start after the event. If you ride for two days, you’ll stay at the Hole in the Wall Camp on Saturday night. You can bring your bike to Mystic on Friday and we’ll ship it to the start for you.
