Up To Speed 3.10.10
Message from Lynn McCarthy
As we enter our 7th season of AngelRide, I can only attempt to express my gratitude for your efforts to support this cause. This is the year of 1-2-3! With the funds we raise this year, the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp’s Hospital Outreach Program (HOP) will hire
- 1 additional Outreach Specialist,
- will serve 2 more Northeast hospitals,
- and will bring joy and laughter to 3 thousand additional seriously ill hospitalized children.
I will be sending you weekly emails with important information plus stories about people you know and will soon get to know, keeping you up to speed on preparations for this year's ride. Make sure to keep reading in case I decide to talk about you.
Shine on,
Lynn
P.S. Tip of the week: Get your bike tuned up!
P.P.S. Check out our AngelRide FAQ. If you have any questions not addressed there, drop me an email anytime.

Volunteer Spotlight
AngelRide is unique for many reasons, and here's a key one: because we are an all-volunteer organization, 100% of the money you raise goes directly to help the HOP kids. It's our 350-person-strong volunteer army that makes that happen and we have all sorts of them: registration and check-in staff, traffic control, bike techs, kitchen crew, luggage crew, bike loading crew, runners, route markers, rest-stop and finish line crew, medical crew, radio operators, photographer, MotoCrew, SAG, and the all-important clean-up crew.
Last week I met with our team-leaders to kick the preparations into high gear. Their energy and excitement hasn't waned a bit over the winter. Each is building their teams and starting their planning.
Take our MotoCrew for example. Led by Poppa Bear DanB, the MotoCrew including Marc B, Jean BG, Matt K, "Moose", Todne, Jasmine and more than 20 others will fan out ahead of you across CT to work with local law enforcement so that your ride is safe and intersections are cleared. More riders -- their bikes just happen to come equipped with motors. These MotoAngels fundraise for HOP too.

Training
In spite of the potholes that seem bigger than ever this year, training is starting to kick up. Join us on March 28th at 9AM, near the entrance of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford. Tom W and Dave G, long-time AngelRiders, will lead a ride that will include only a couple hills.
We will be posting a calendar of more training rides soon. Meanwhile, check out mapmyride.com to plot your training rides.
As Dr. Bob (a.k.a. Superman) would say, "Ride On!"

Fundraising
AngelRide is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. So why ride? Why raise $? Because your time and efforts spent fundraising, training, and volunteering have built a HOP program that serves 18 hospitals across the Northeast. Our 14 HOP specialists, and believe me these are special people, have visited 15,000 seriously ill children in their hospital rooms with a suitcase full of fun. That's what you have done. That's AngelRide.
Some of our riders have gotten creative in their fundraising efforts -- here are a few of their tips:
- Mike T says "I make sure to let people know there's no donation that's too small. Every dollars adds up."
- Dan G has the infamous story about finding a wallet in the street. When he returned it to the owner, she asked "How can I repay you?" Dan told her about the AngelRide and she made a $200 donation.
AngelRide is always looking for more riders, particularly for the Sunday ride.
- Dan S says "Every year I try to recruit a few more friends to ride with me. Every additional rider is raising more money, which will get us closer and closer to our 1-2-3 goal."
Also, if your donors prefer to write a check, have them make checks payable to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp before inputing them to your personal Web page under "offline donations" and mail to: 555 Long Wharf Drive., New Haven, CT 06511.
